Wood is a truly unique material: it moves, expands and contracts. You could say it "works". Just like DIY enthusiasts on all of their projects. This organic character is what makes the material feel so welcoming and cosy – and unfortunately, also what makes it so tricky to fasten wooden flooring. The soft boards are not only complicated to install, but also exert extra pressure on the screw connections when they start to move – which explains why flooring so often creaks.
What do I need to know?
Because wood is always moving, you need screw connections capable of absorbing this. After all, even if the dimensions of screw holes and engineered wood boards change, screws must continue to hold the subfloor firmly in place on the floor joists. When fastening solid wood flooring on floor joists or wood subfloors, screws need to be positioned on top of the groove and inserted at an angle. Always make sure you are using the correct head shape to guarantee that the tongue of the next board can slide smoothly into the groove of the previous one.
What solutions does SPAX offer?
Every challenge in interior design has its solution. And with wood flooring, there are even two – the two screw types developed by SPAX to cover all wood flooring requirements.
The flooring screw keeps all OSB or chipboard elements in place on the substructure, regardless of the forces exerted on it. This is possible thanks to the separate fixing thread below the screw head. When installed, this thread sits inside the flooring panel, preventing it from moving even under heavy loads. The SPAX floor board screw is ideal for laying solid wood flooring: the arrow-like CUT point slices into the material and the milling ribs below the head ensure smooth countersinking. The small flat countersunk head effortlessly pulls the board onto the substructure without getting in the way of the tongue-and-groove connection.
