Your balcony is a place to relax and enjoy life. The only work that needs to be done here is by your balcony itself. After all, it is not only subjected to strong static stress from all possible forces. Like other outdoor wood constructions, it is also directly and indirectly exposed to the elements all year round. Because safety is of particular importance here, all wood elements need to be firmly connected and held in place. And there can be quite a few of them: depending on dimensions and widths, a balcony may require large wood cross sections for frames, posts, head bands and sometimes also joist framing. For balcony flooring with decking boards, make sure you remember to factor in structural wood protection in order to prevent water from pooling between the horizontal wood components and leading to waterlogging.
What else should be kept in mind?
The most important thing: your balcony must always be safe and secure, whatever the load, whatever the weather. In order to ensure this, choose fasteners that keep the wood connections firmly in place and withstand all tensile and shear forces, since the pressure will be dissipated through the wood into the foundations. To make sure that your project can withstand all forces, we recommend two types of screws: with their high load-bearing capacity on pull-out, full-thread screws with cylindrical head offer sufficient reserves for all occurring tensile forces. Washer head screws with partial thread pull the wood elements so tightly together that loads can be transferred from one to the other. With a corrosion-protected surface or in stainless steel for maximum durability.
What solutions does SPAX offer?
Everything that applies to outdoor projects also goes for balconies. SPAX screws made of stainless steel A2 ensure that your balcony is also ready to face adverse conditions. And with partial or full thread, they can also withstand all tensile forces. In terms of head shape, you can choose from flat countersunk head, raised countersunk head or pan head. Even warped boards can be tightened with the SPAX washer head screw in stainless steel A2. Available in diameters of 6 and 8 mm.
